Paul was first mentioned
as a nephew of Diane and first cousin of Bernice around
2000.
He
lived in Sorento, Italy. A storyline even involved Bernice
going to visit him on holiday.
Recently he has been mentioned quite
a lot
since his mother Val arrived
in the series in February 2004.
Until recently mother and son had not
spoken for 5 years after he tried to steal
one of her boyfriends. However it was Paul
who
told Val where Diane was now living. So Val turned up in Emmerdale.
Paul had lived
Italy where he has his own business in Sorento.
Paul does
a drag queen act and calls his character "Thelma-Louise" right
up to the time he arrived in Emmerdale. Paul
is gay.
A word is appropriate here before Paul's
adventures in Emmerdale begin, about his motherVal as it
is relevant to upcoming storylines involving Paul.
At 19 Val began an affair with her brother-in-law Rodney
Blackstock. She claims he broke her heart. Their
affair began one night when Val went over to Rodney & Diane's
home. Diane was out and Rodney was babysitting their
daughter Bernice who
was in bed. The affair continued for a while until one
morning Diane woke up to find a note saying Rodney had
left her for Rita "the hatchet girl" with whom
he had been seeing.
The end of Rodney's marriage to Diane also
signaled the end of his affair with Val. They would not
see each other again for nearly 30 years at which point
they would continue where they left off.
Diane did not know about the affair between
her then husband Rodney and her sister Val until 5th April
2004.
Two weeks after Rodney left the sisters,
Val began seeing Jimmy Pepper and was soon pregnant supposedly
with his child. However from the first moment Val's back
story was introduced, there have been subtle hints to the
viewers about Paul's true parentage.
In September 2004 Val first revealed to her
sister that Paul was Rodney's son. She later shouted it
out to the whole village at Diane's wedding 21 October
2004.
