A Huge Big Thank you to Paul Berridge who has made various profiles and photos availabe to me. They were previously on his Beckindale site (that is no more). The following is one of those profiles - although the coloured boxes have been added.
Kirk Smith was born in Liverpool on the 21st February 1969. He is one of six children. Kirk's father was a musician and taught the family to play piano and sing from a very early age. At the age of 10, Kirk was already writing his own material and performing in local talent shows. He loved to sing and decided at age 16, he would travel to London to make his name.
Kirk left the Liverpool soap of Boookside in 1993 after two years as Mike Dixon's student pal,Keith Rooney, and this year he returned to the world of soap as Emmerdale trucker Pete Collins.
'When you've been in a show like Brookside, people never forget you, so I was made up when I got the Emmerdale job, because now soap fans have a new show to talk to me about.'
Kirk, who also spent three years on Children's Ward as Tony Jackson, didn't always want to be an actor.
'My first love was music," he explains. 'When I was about 16, I was singing and doing local gigs, when an American director asked me if I'd like to be in a musical he was staging. After that I started doing bits of theatre on the fringe circuit, and before I knew it I was an actor. 'I still love music and singing with my dad, but I'm not planning a career change. My music is just for me.'
He may not be aiming for Top Of The Pops, but that doesn't mean he's not ambitious. 'I'd love to work with Robert De Niro or Denzel Washington. At the moment I'm having a brilliant time in Emmerdale and hopefully I'll be here for a while. But you can always dream, can't you?'
Kirk left Emmerdale when his character Pete Collins, was killed in a lorry crash on 20th March 2000.
