Where The Heart Is
Return of the cosy Yorkshire Dales drama
which is beginning to run out of steam even though it's still popular
with millions. This opener
sees the arrival of new family the Boothes. Keith Barron is the dad
who has a heart attack and his son and daughter-in-law are played by
The Bill's Andrew Paul and Emmerdale's Samantha Giles. Meanwhile, Karen
(Leslie Ash) meets her long-lost son.

BERNICE makes a comeback to Emmerdale as the villagers prepare to
say a sad farewell to her mate Tricia.
But Bernice’s return is delayed when her car breaks down in
the middle of nowhere as she and baby Gabby drive back from Brighton.
Gabby’s dad Ashley is upset by her anguished phone call because
- still suffering injuries from the New Year road accident - he can’t
drive to the rescue.
Loyal Laurel volunteers to go, only for Bernice to take her car and
thoughtlessly leave her abandoned at the roadside.
"It’s a bit of a comical comeback in some very tragic circumstances," says
Samantha Giles, who plays popular Bernice.
"She is devastated by Tricia’s death and she’s desperate
to get Gabby to safety, but she does leave Laurel in the lurch."
Laurel drives out to fetch Ashley’s ex in her tiny car, which
is already full with cleaning products. When she arrives, Bernice quickly
takes charge and jumps in to the driver’s seat with Gabby beside
her.
"There is no room for anyone else," says Samantha. "So
Laurel is left behind. And when Bernice gets to Emmerdale, she has
a happy reunion with Ashley and they forget all about poor Laurel."
Bernice’s return comes at the end of a week that is totally
dominated by the preparations for poor Tricia’s funeral.
Marlon wants a service to suit his late wife’s fun-loving personality.
He doesn’t want black veils and miserable hymns, insisting it’s
not how Tricia would want to be remembered.
Steph, Tricia’s mum, struggles with her own emotional turmoil,
and grandfather Turner is angry when she rows about who will speak
at the service.
The Dingles offer a horse for the procession but Steph thinks it’s
tacky and hits the roof.
She says she won’t go to the funeral and Turner walks out in
disgust, leaving his daughter to burst into tears.
BBC PURE SOAP 8TH JANUARY 2004
Bernice is back

When stunning redhead Samantha Giles made her debut on Emmerdale millions
sat up and took notice. And as the Woolpack's first landlady, Bernice,
she certainly helped spice up the hit soap.
But in recent weeks, Giles, 32, has had to cope with tabloid speculation
about her own private life.
Her relationship with former co-star Peter Amory (better known as the
soap's late money-grabbing Chris Tate) has generated much coverage.
Giles steadfastly refuses to discuss her relationship with Amory but
she is happy to talk about her return to the much-loved ITV1 soap.
On Friday January 16, Bernice returns to Emmerdale to pay her respects
to old sparring partner Tricia Dingle who was fatally injured in the
New Year storms.
"
The reason for her coming back is sad because of Tricia's accident.
She's also bringing her daughter back because she's had her over the
Christmas period so she's just catching up with people," Giles
says.
Bernice's relationship with vicar Ashley Thomas culminated in their
wedding on Christmas Day 2000. However, that marriage was soon on the
rocks after the landlady's fling with Woolpack chef Carlos led to much
scandal. Now the dust seems to have settled.
"
I think what's nice is her relationship with Ashley has moved on and
become a much warmer friendship," remarks Giles. "When she
left, obviously they couldn't bear to be in the same room as each other.
But now things have changed. He's got somebody else and Bernice has
got somebody else, they're able to just have a warm and close friendship."
Giles plays a mum in both Emmerdale and Where The Heart Is. Although
she has no children of her own, she admits she'd be delighted the start
a family at some point.
"
Oh yes, I'd love to have a child one day. I think I've got a bit of
time left," she laughs. "I don't think I'm over the hill
yet.
" I haven't really got a plan as to when that will be but I suppose you
just know when it's the right time."
Giles may have left Emmerdale in 2002, but she found getting back into
character easier than expected.
" I thought it was going to be difficult but I'd been doing my showreel
over the latter part of the summer. I thought it would be useful putting
clips together. As soon as I got the script and started reading them
out loud, the voice came back and so did the character so it wasn't
that hard."
:: Samantha Giles returns to Emmerdale on Friday January 16, 2003 and
her final episode is on Friday January 30.

Me and My Health - Samantha Giles
By Roger Crow, PA Features
Samantha Giles, 33, was born in Maidstone, Kent and studied English
and
drama at Bristol University.
In 1998 she made her debut as Bernice Blackstock in Emmerdale and
spent five
years on the hit soap. She left in 2003 but returns for a two-week
stint
from January 16. She also appears in Where the Heart Is which returns
for a
new series later in the year. She is married to Nick Moore and lives
in
Windsor, Berkshire.
HOW MUCH SLEEP DO YOU NEED?
“I need a lot of sleep. At least eight hours.”
HOW DO YOU FEEL FIRST THING IN THE MORNING?
“When I’m awake, I’m immediately awake. Once I’m
awake I like to chat and I
can’t go back to sleep.”
WHAT EXERCISE DO YOU TAKE?
“I’m very keen on yoga. I think that’s absolutely
brilliant. I’m not very
good at doing exercise purely for exercise’s sake. What I like
about yoga is
that it’s exercise but it’s spiritual as well so you feel
like you’re
working on your mind and your soul. I think it’s a necessity,
for me anyway,
in being able to deal with life.
“I like swimming and I like badminton. I find the gym really
boring. I went
climbing with my dad over the summer and I did go to the gym before
we went
climbing because I felt I needed to get a bit fitter.”
ARE YOU CAREFUL ABOUT WHAT YOU EAT?
“The food on set can be very fattening so I try to be careful.”
ARE YOU OR HAVE YOU EVER BEEN OVERWEIGHT?
“Yes, I was overweight when I was a teenager and when I was
at university.”
DO YOU TAKE VITAMIN AND MINERAL PILLS?
“Not really, although I’m trying to take vitamin C at
the moment because of
all these colds going around. If I’m feeling a bit run down I
will take
acidophilus. It protects you against candida which starts in the stomach.
It
’
s like live yoghurt and it stops you from getting thrush basically.
Candida
can cause digestive problems so it’s a very good supplement to
take. I used
to take B6 for PMT but I haven’t been too good at taking that.
I should
start again.”
DO YOU DRINK OR SMOKE TOO MUCH?
“No, I don’t think so. I don’t smoke. I do like
to have a drink, especially
red or white wine. I can go without. This week, for example, I’m
on
penicillin so I haven’t been drinking at all and I haven’t
thought about
it.”
DO YOU CATCH A COLD MOST WINTERS?
“I have one at the moment, so yes.”
WHAT FOODS CAN’T YOU BEAR TO EAT?
“I’m a very fussy eater actually. I don’t like mushy
peas. They look and
they smell disgusting. I don’t like things like cockles or mussels.
I’m a
bit squeamish if something’s got a peculiar texture. Having said
that, I
like smoked salmon but I wouldn’t be able to eat caviar. That
would just
make me sick.”
DO YOU THINK YOU SUFFER FROM STRESS?
“Yes. I sometimes get really stressed which is where the yoga
helps. I’ve
got a cat and it’s great to be at home and spend time with her.
I think
having an animal relaxes you anyway.”
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN IN HOSPITAL?
“No.”
DOES YOUR JOB AFFECT YOUR HEALTH?
“Oh definitely. You can get very run down. You really have to
look after
yourself, especially if you’re filming in the winter.”
HOW OFTEN DO YOU CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR?
“Not very often. Probably about twice a year but if I am ill
I will go at
the drop of a hat.”
DO YOU LOOK AFTER YOUR SKIN?
“I do try and drink a lot of water. I do love face crèmes,
especially a day
crème, but I think if you’re going to use one, you need
to have one with SPF
in it which is sun protection factor. It protects your skin from not
just
the sun but wind, rain, smoky environments and all that kind of thing.”
ARE YOU HAPPY WITH YOUR BODY?
“Is anybody? It’s all right. I live with it. I don’t
think it’s going to
change that dramatically now. I don’t think I’m ever going
to be a size 10,
let’s put it that way.”
DO YOU TAKE MORE CARE OF YOURSELF AS THE YEARS GO BY?
“Not really. I think you notice the wrinkles a bit more. I’ve
got this smile
line at the side of my mouth now. It’s only on one side. It’s
only really
noticeable if I’m tired but at least it’s not a frown line.”
Beauty secret of Emmerdale's Bernice
Samantha Giles, who plays Bernice Blackstock, the sinful
estranged wife of the saintly vicar in Emmerdale, has revealed the
secret of
her trim figure and youthful looks - yoga.
The thirty-three year old Kent-born actress told the Press Association
that although she finds working out at the gym a bore, the gentle stretching
she undergoes in her yoga class helps stimulate both mind and body.
"
I'm very keen on yoga. I think that's absolutely brilliant. I'm not
very good at doing exercise purely for exercise's sake.
"
What I like about yoga is that it's exercise but it's spiritual as
well so you feel like you're working on your mind and your soul. I
think it's a necessity, for me anyway, in being able to deal with life.
"
I like swimming and I like badminton. I find the gym really boring.
I went climbing with my dad over the summer and I did go to the gym
before we went climbing because I felt I needed to get a bit fitter."
Emmerdale fans last saw Bernice sailing off into the sunset on a cruise
ship after a steamy affair that scandalised the Dales community.
She briefly returns to the show for Tricia's funeral. But any hopes
of a reconciliation with husband Ashley are soon dashed. After so long
apart the couple quickly realise they have little in common any more.
Samantha, who studied English and drama at Bristol University, also
appears in Where the Heart Is, which returns for a new series later
in the year. She is married to Nick Moore and lives in Windsor, Berkshire.

Emmerdale favourite Bernice Blackstock returns to the village
this week.
The flame-haired adulteress was last seen fleeing Emmerdale after her marriage
to vicar Ashley Thomas collapsed following a fling with chef Carlos.
Now a couple of years have passed since her swift exit, and Bernice - who
is returning daughter Gabby back to Ashley following a Christmas break - has
got herself together again.
Despite her own good fortune recently, Bernice is devastated to hear that
her good pal Tricia Dingle has died and makes the journey north to attend her
funeral.
And for actress Samantha Giles, the short return to her former job has been
a real tonic.
She says, "When I heard about Tricia dying, I though it was really important
for Bernice to be at the funeral because they were such good friends. And it
was also great for me to come back and catch up with everybody at Emmerdale
again.
"I've had an absolute ball. It already feels like I've never been away,
even though it's been a long time."
But with her former spouse Ashley romancing Woolpack landlady Louise Appleton,
will Bernice find herself unwelcome at the vicarage?

The brassy bar manager has loved spending time with daughter Gabby and cannot

and decides to confront vicar Ashley with her plan.
However, Ashley - who has just split up with girlfriend Louise Appleton -
lives for his daughter and is the perfect dad. He is already slightly disturbed
by Bernice’s strange behaviour around himself and Gabby, but has no idea
what her plan is.
And to make matters worse, when Bernice starts to explain her wish to start
a new life with Gabby down south, Ashley misunderstands her.
Will Bernice leave on her own?
