ITV1 Network 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM
Ashley (John Middleton) struggles to contain his fury following the argument the previous day and informs the bishop (Peter Cartwright) that he has decided to resign from his post. The bishop urges him to reconsider his sacrifice but the hotheaded vicar goes home and tells Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy) that from now on it is just them and Gabby (Annelise Manojlovic). Is this really the end for Reverend Thomas?
Over at Home Farm, Sadie (Patsy Kensit) is outraged to discover that Jimmy (Nick Miles) has withdrawn the savings from their bank account. When she confronts her husband he quickly covers by explaining that he bet the money on a horse, but will Sadie suspect that Jimmy is up to no good?
Meanwhile, Pollard (Chris Chittell) cheers up Lisa (Jane Cox) who is upset that Zak (Steve Halliwell) hasn’t bought her a birthday present. Zak is angry when he later sees his wife with another man and Pollard soon finds himself wiping birthday cake off his face!
Ashley is still furious over the Bishop’s decision and wonders about all the hard work he has put into the Church, and all for nothing. He tells Laurel that he wanted to start a family, but that the Bishop may not give his approval for years. Laurel sweetly tells him that she’s good at waiting, though. Aww
But later in the pub Ashley comes to the conclusion that the Bishop is just testing him, that he wanted him to go away and think about what he was doing. He decides to visit the Bishop once again and apologise. He secretly hopes this will change the Bishop's mind...
| The Bishop accepts the apology and is glad that Ashley has thought
long and hard about his decision, but he tells him that he still
disapproves of the wedding. He reminds Ashley that the only think
that will change his mind is time.
Ashley argues that he needs Laurel, that she makes him better at his job and that he can’t make her keep her life on hold until the Bishop gives his approval. But the Bishop is unmoved, to which Ashley tells him that the only logical thing for him to do is resign!
The Bishop begs him to reconsider and tells him that once again he is being hot-headed and rushing into his decisions. But Ashley is resolute and leaves.
Meanwhile, it’s Lisa’s birthday and despite giving Zak money to buy her a present, he comes back with cans of beers and a baking tray for her. She’s furious and storms out threatening to never come back! It’s not long before Pollard finds her and invites her out for a birthday lunch at the Woolpack!
Jimmy is in danger of being exposed when Sadie spots a message on the phone from the bank. She calls them up and they tell her it’s regarding a withdrawal requested by Jimmy. Luckily for Jimmy, they don’t tell her how much it is, but she wants to find out…
She confronts him as soon as he walks in the door, but a bit of quick thinking later and Jimmy's blamed it on a moment of madness at the bookies! He tells her he won’t do it again, to which she replies: ‘You’d better not because if I find out that you’ve lied to me again you wouldn’t wanna bet on what would happen next.’
Back at the pub and Zak and Shadrach walk in with a cake they’ve baked for Lisa. Zak is furious that Pollard has taken his woman out for dinner and when Eric starts saying how rubbish the cake is, Zak shoves it into Pollard’s face while Shadrach starts to lick him! All is forgiven as Lisa appreciates Zak's effort!
Ashley, meanwhile, has not returned from the Bishop's causing Laurel to worry. She heads to the Church later though and finds him there. He tells her that he had to do the right thing, and she says she understands. But to her shock, he then takes off his dog collar and the realisation that he’s quit his job hits Laurel.
She begs him not to, but he tells her that he can’t be without her. ‘But it’s what you do, it’s your job, I can’t let you walk away.’ But he simply tells her: ‘I have to do the right thing for us, I love you. We’ll be ok.’ But the poor vicar’s expression says nothing of the sort…
