Andy unwittingly banishes Daz for telling the truth. Desperate to know where he stands with Diane, Jack provokes a reaction by popping the question. Laurel is shattered by Bernice's lonely-hearts advice.

Daz can’t believe it when Andy takes Katie’s side and agrees that his tearaway brother has outstayed his welcome. As Katie delivers an ultimatum Andy is forced to put Daz back into care.

It breaks his heart to disown his brother, but Andy can’t risk losing Katie and is sick of Daz’s perpetual lies. The youngster is sickened when Katie feigns tears and comforts Andy telling him it will be for the best. Daz feels utterly betrayed as the social worker arrives to take him away.

From YTV EMMERDALE Wednesday 28 January 2004 at 7.00pm on ITV1 Network Will Diane (ELIZABETH ESTENSEN) accept Jack's (CLIVE HORNBY) proposal?

Diane is still deeply depressed over Tricia’s death and Bernice’s announcement that she is moving to Brighton leaves her even more unsettled. Not knowing which way to turn, the grieving landlady wonders whether she should be moving on too.

Jack is later taken aback when Diane tells him she has decided to go to Brighton to be with Bernice. Angry that she is running away from her problems, Jack tries to make her see reason. Suddenly realising he may lose the woman he loves, Jack blurts out a marriage proposal. Diane is stunned but promises him she will give him an answer the following day.

Elsewhere in the village, Louise and Bernice clash over the arrangements to get the Woolpack re-opened and Bernice takes advantage of Laurel’s generous nature. In doing so Bernice cottons on to Laurels feelings for Ashley and tries to dissuade her.

Wednesday 28.01.04 ITV.COM An Unwise Ultimatum
Social services come to collect Daz Daz can't understand why Andy is standing by Katie rather than believing him. Katie's proving ably manipulative, but still feels she's ruining Daz's life just for the sake of her and Robert. Robert however, has no such qualms; he tells Daz nobody will ever care what he thinks, or about him. Jack tells a troubled Andy he should be proud of what he's done with Daz, even though Andy has decided to send Daz away. He hopes Daz will understand it's for the best. When Daz gets hom to find the social worker, he quickly works out what's happening - despite telling the truth, he's being punished. He won't accept that Andy can't handle the responsibility, that he's glad he met him, or even a hug goodbye.
Bernice tells Laurel that Sam Dingle is more her type and she should forget Ashley At the Woolpack, Chas thinks Bernice is pushing volunteer cleaner Laurel around, and encourages her into walking out when 'the great motivator' rubbishes her over the state of the toilets. When Bernice goes to her house to apologise and offer to pay her - neither with great conviction - she realises just how much Laurel's life centres around Ashley. With her usual tact, Bernice tells her she's just not suitable for him, and even suggests Sam Dingle as an alternative.
Diane is surprised by Jack suggesting they get married. Things are awkward between Jack and Diane. Giving her a watch she left behind, he resignedly tells her he's there, should she decide to chat. Diane can see how upset Jack is, but tells Bernice she can't deal with it. Bernice uses the moment to finally persuade her mother to join her in Brighton. When Diane tells Jack about her move, he tells her it won't work. While she keeps taking things on as problems, she'll always have problems to run away from. He wishes she'd just stay and marry him. When Diane asks if that was a proposal, he agrees. Without thinking of her temperament, he gives her just 24 hours to decide.
