Back to 2000 Update Index or 1972-2002 Episode Index or Lane Kent's Emmerdale
Thanks Sarah and Dionne for what is below.
week 18-20 Jan 2000
The episode opens with Kelly looking at Vic's photo, remembering what
her father was like. Donna catches her, and asks her what's the
matter. Kelly makes up a feeble excuse, and tells Donna to "be lucky"
as she goes for the school bus.
Viv tries to get Kelly to put in extra hours at the shop so that they
can make some extra profit before she sells up. Kelly is extremely
rude to her. When Scott tells her that she has to stop being so rude
to Viv, Kelly tells him that he won't have to worry any more - it
won't happen again.
Kelly goes to Vic's grave, apologising for being a bad daughter and
not turning out the way he would have wanted. She tries to have a chat
with Ashley as he walks past, but he's preoccupied with other things.
In despair, she trudges off towards the cricket pavilion, stopping for
brief chat with Seth on the way.
Meantime, Roy is at Home Farm, fixing Zoe's car. Zoe invites him in
for a cup of tea, and they have a chat about Kelly's recent
behaviour. Roy is worried that he won't be able to keep Miss Piggy in
the manner which "she deserves", despite Viv repaying the deposit. He
also declares his hatred for Home Farm, as both Dave & Linda died
there. Zoe is sympathetic, but Chris wheels in with his usual barbed
Back to Kelly. She's at the pavilion, writing letters to various
people (Vic's photo is included in Donna's letter). After leaving a
taped message for Roy and removing her wedding ring, she takes an
Paddy storms into the shop, angry that Kelly hasn't arrived for work
and telling Viv and Scott that she's sacked. Viv puts it down to
Kelly's usual sour mood, but Scott twigs that there's more to it than
that. They go off to look for her, bumping into Seth, who tells them
that Kelly said she was off to the Sugdens but was heading in the
direction of the pavilion. Th pair set off there, and are about to
leave again when Scott notices an empty window at the side. Inside,
they find all the letters, and listen to her tape to Roy in which she
apologises for being alive and tells him that she'll be dead soon.
Scott turns round, and Kelly is lying unconscious right behind him
(how they didn't see her earlier is a mystery to all except the
Scott rings an ambulance, but it won;'t arrive for 30 minutes. Viv
runs out for help, eventually finding Zak, who agrees to take her to
the hospital in the van. Zak speeds off, but is soon caught by Angie.
She's about to throw the book at him, but instead offers a police
escort when she sees how urgent it is.
Meantime, news quickly spreads round the village - everyone is
shocked at how such a young, vibrant girl (tm the writers) could try
to take her life. They also feel guilty for not realising how
depressed she is. Ashley wishes that he's spared the time earlier to
talk to her, while Zoe blames Chris and others before him (esp Tom
Bainbridge) for treating Kelly as nothing more than a cheap tart when
she was really a confused little girl.
Roy is in a state, wondering why she did it and upset that he could
have missed the signs of her depression. Dr Rawton, a new character,
tells him that Kelly is in a coma and has lost the baby. Roy is
distraught, and bursts into tears as he sits at her bedside.
Roy (through tears, mixed with snot): I love you Kel.
Kelly's blood pressure: suddenly rises
The doctors kick Roy out to try and save kelly. The epsilon ends with
Roy still in tears outside the ICU, and the cameraman leaving viewers
wondering where he'd learnt his god-awful technique.
There's only really one story today - the fallout after Kelly's
overdose yesterday. But at least we get to see some of Adele Silva's
best ever acting (she's unconscious throughout!).
There is one other small happening - Ollie has organised a date with a
mystery man called Howard. Suprisigly, Angie is willing to let her go,
though Sean is apprehensive and wants to meet him first.
Anyway on to the main story...
Carrying on from where we left off last episode, the doctors
frantically try to save Kelly as the heart monitor flatlines. They
manage to revive her, but are worried there might be the possibility of
permanent kidney, heart or liver damage.
It's time for recriminations all round as practically everyone is
blaming themselves in some way for Kelly's attempted suicide. Her
family and "friends" sit anxiously outside her hospital room waiting
for more news or for her to regain consciousness.
Viv, Scott and Roy are all very upset and sit numbly most of the time,
though Viv does lash out at Ashley when he turns up to offer support.
Viv confesses to Scott that she's give anything to have Kelly there
now, even if they were just having one of their usual arguments. Roy
is beside himself with grief and when he's finally let in to see Kelly,
pleads with her not to leave him, though she's still out cold.
A guilty Mandy turns up at the hospital, regretting not listening to
Kelly when she had the chance. She doesn't know if she can ever
forgive herself. When she gets a chance to speak to Scott she also
accuses him of driving Kelly to it.
Back in the village, the news has spread and everyone is hoping Kelly
will pull through. Not knowing what else to do, Chris offers to
organise things at the Post Office and look after Donna. Chris is
remorseful for telling Kelly she ought to get Roy out of her life. He
explains to Terry that he thought it was for the best, but he never
realised what she might do. When Donna eventually gets home from
school, Chris tries to gently break the news to her, but obviously
she's very upset and wants to go and see Kelly.
Meanwhile at the hospital, Roy is still at Kelly's bedside. Mandy sits
with him as he ponders why it happened but she doesn't really know what
to say. When he mentions the baby, she's shocked and proceeds to
confront Scott outside. He's equally stunned and starts to blub as
Mandy has a go at him. He's genuinely upset, but Mandy is furious and
tells him he doesn't know what real grief and pain is, but hopes that
he one day will.
Kelly et al
While Miss Piggy continues her award-winning performance as a cow in a
coma, all around her bad acting abounds. It's the usual histrionics by
her bed side - Chris tries to offer help to Viv, who tells him to sod
off. Donna can't face seeing Kelly at first and runs off. Kathy offers
her support later and has to face the sight of Roy, drowning in a sea
of tears and snot, wondering what he'll find out about Kelly when she
But the Overacting award goes to Viv, who freaks out when Scott tells
her what Kelly said in her tape to Roy. When Viv finds out that Kelly
blames her, she loses it completely and states that she has tried to
love her, tried to be a good mother to her, but all Kelly does is
whine on about herself and she can't stand it any more. Scott tells
her to calm down, but Viv declares that she hates Kelly. When she
storms out, Scott breaks down in tears (which seems to involve
screwing up his face and attempting to whimper).
Later, Viv tells Terry what happens, and admits that she meant every
word of it. She deices to stop trying so hard when Kelly recovers, but
feels she owes it to Vic to keep an eye on her.
-- Sean finds it hard to stifle his giggles when he meets Howard. He's
expecting a boy band reject, but instead he's a bespectacled nerd.
Ollie is embarrassed, but Howard seems to like the family.
-- Andy tries to pluck up the courage to ask Ollie out. He's just
about to knock on the door when Ollie & Howard come out. Andy is
devastated, and Jack doesn't make him feel much better when they have
a chat about it later. Jack is also preoccupied with his problems with
Sarah, which shows in his advice to Andy.
-- Zak offers to sell Jack some pink diesel. Jack thinks that he would
have hit rock bottom to accept such an offer, but Zak reminds him of
how much cheaper it will be to run his machinery without paying any
-- Betty gives up her job cleaning at the Woolpack. She is also very
concerned to see Seth and Reggie getting on so well.
-- Diane decides to move into the Woolpack, now she's a full partner.
She suggests to Bernice that Alan & Tricia may need to move out now
she's decided to move in.
